Dr. Mozelle Berkowitz z’’l
October 17, 1944 – June 1, 2019

Dr. Mozelle Berkowitz z’’l was a champion for children with disabilities and a pioneer in bringing inclusion to schools in Newton Massachusetts. In 1993 Mozelle was one of the first to initiate inclusion within the Newton Public School system. She received her doctoral degree from Boston University. Her dissertation lay the groundwork for her inclusion work and was called “Just a Kid in Our Class: The Integration Of Children With Severe Disabilities In Neighborhood Schools.” With quiet confidence, Mozelle z’’l had a “get-it-done” attitude. Her approach to inclusion was based on three main principles: “families matter most” and should be included in the hopes and dreams of their children, “presume competence” and “inclusion is the default.” She mentored a generation of special education administrators, advocates, and facilitators who point to her as their source of inspiration to this day.

Mozelle’s daughters, Dasee Berkowitz and Alisa Kotler-Berkowitz, invite you to contribute generously to Shutaf Inclusion Programs in Jerusalem.
